My Quilt Adventure–Sewing with Nancy!

Nancy Zieman, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters!

I’m back from my Quilt Adventure–a trip to Wisconsin to meet Nancy Zieman and record two episodes of Sewing with Nancy!

And what an adventure it was!

My daughter, Faye joined me for the trip.

We arrived in Beaver Dam at Nancy’s office and home of Nancy’s Notions Catalog warehouse and retail store– where we were graciously greeted by Nancy and her wonderful staff.

We spent the day writing a script and preparing a few extra samples.

Nancy had an advanced copy of my book, Machine Quilting 1-2-3— (Available March 21!)

and I did MY FIRST BOOK SIGNING!

The next day, we traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to the Wisconsin Public Televison studios where we met Big Bird!

And then went straight to work preparing the studio set.

It was fascinating to see “behind the scenes” of a TV studio!

Soon it was   Lights!  Camera!  Action!

I was a little nervous–but Nancy is a pro–she’s recorded nearly 800 episodes of Sewing with Nancy since 1982 -making it one of the longest running TV shows!

You can watch full episodes of Sewing with Nancy online HERE.

And be sure to check out her blog, HERE

Nancy has a wonderful way of making her guest feel welcome and calm.

After several hours of demonstrating both doodles and quilting…

the control room declared:  “That’s a wrap!”

Machine Quilting 1-2-3 on Sewing with Nancy will air on September 11, 2017–

And Faye and I will always remember our time with Nancy Zieman, her husband, Rich and her staff, Donna, Emily, Vicki, and all…as one of our most exciting quilt adventures  ever!

Thank you, Nancy!

Doodling Our Way to Feathers

FMQ, Doodles, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters and Doodlers!

We have more than 125 FREE step-by-step machine quilting tutorials here at The Inbox Jaunt.

However, there are two notable exceptions….

There is no tutorial for Stippling and Meandering…I’ve written about  Why So Many of Us Can’t Stipple or Meander HERE

And we don’t have a tutorial for quilted feathers…I LOVE feathers, but I have tried to stick with original tutorials.

However, I have heard YOUR requests…so this year I will add a few Feather Tutorials.

START WITH DOODLING

Like all motifs, good Feathers start with doodling.  So pour yourself a cup of tea and let’s doodle!

Start with The Sweep doodle tutorial HERE.

THE PRECURSOR TO FULL FEATHERS

Once you are comfortable with The Sweep we are ready to move on… learning the rounded part of feathers-The Curl.

THE SWEEP AND CURL

As you sweep from the center line to the right line, curl around.

Practice for several minutes.

That may be enough for one doodling session.

Repeat this over several days.

Then add an echo line on the inside of the Sweep with Curl.

Take your time and don’t be discouraged if this takes many, many days.

ADD THE LEFT SWEEP AND CURL

Once you are comfortable with the right Sweep and Curl, repeat the process on the left side.

Next, connect the Sweep and Curls along the centerline.

Wouldn’t that be a nice Valentine’s Day motif?

Heart Leaf Border

Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy, Heart Leaf

Good Morning, Quilters!

Was I in hibernation?  Where did January go???

We are on the heels of February already and we will continue our Flower of the Month free motion quilting.

(In case you slept through January, too…you can find The Carnation–the January flower HERE

The Carnation--A Free Motion Quilt Tutorial

Our February flower (The Violet–coming mid-February) has a heart-shaped leaf and I thought you might want to incorporate this motif into your Valentine’s Day quilting.

THE HEART LEAF

Begin by drawing three parallel lines.  In the samples below, the lines are one inch apart.

Begin stitching on the middle line.  Stitch a small clockwise curl.

Reverse direction and stitch a tapered leaf.

Stitch the mirror image on the left side.

Stitch a small counter-clockwise curl.

Echo stitch the curl back to the center line.

Add a curvy line through the center of the leaf and begin the next leaf with a small cur.

After completing the entire row of Heart Leaves, echo stitch both sides of the leaf for more emphasis.

This motif stands alone–a very easy leaf–and it will look great when we combine it with the Wood Violet Flower later in February….

Hope your hibernation is over and YOU are ready to quilt!

Are YOU 1/12 of the way through YOUR New Year’s goals?

We’d LOVE to hear!
