The Baby Carriage-A Free Motion Quilt Tutorial

Machine Quilting, Tutorial, Baby Carriage

Good Morning, Quilters-Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunties, God Mothers, and Babysitters!

Any new babies coming in 2017?

If so-the Baby Carriage machine quilt motif is perfect for you!  Stitch a row of carriages to fill a border or add a single carriage in a block.

THE BABY CARRIAGE-A MACHINE QUILTING TUTORIAL

Begin by drawing four evenly spaced parallel lines to fit your border.  In the sample below, the lines are one inch apart.

Begin stitching on the second line from the top.  Stitch a bowl shape.  Stop stitching –with the needle in the down position.

Stitch along the line to create a semi-circle.

Stitch a curved line to the top line, then stitch straight down.

Stitch three or four scallops along the vertical line–then begin echo stitching the “hood” of the carriage.

Echo stitch the left side of the carriage then curl around to begin the wheel.

Spiral in (clockwise) and spiral out (counter-clockwise)-then take a few stitches under the carriage.

(NOTE–If your Spirals aren’t perfect–don’t worry–messy spirals look great too!)

Stitch the front wheel–Spiral counter-clockwise in to the center, then clockwise out–again don’t worry about perfect spirals!

Echo stitch the front of the Baby Carriage then add a spiral handle.

Over stitch the handle–and echo stitch the centerline of the Baby Carriage, or….

Overstitch the handle to begin the next Baby Carriage in the row…

Quick Tip–Machine Quilting

Happy Monday, Quilters!

Just a Quick Tip for free motion quilting a smooth line...

When free motion quilting,  your hands form a “hoop”.  You can move the “hoop” left or right and up and down, but when you need to move your hands —to change the position of your “hoop”–STOP STITCHING!

Many beginners try to move their hand position while quilting.

It is nearly impossible to maintain a smooth stitching line while moving both your hands and the quilt.

So if  YOU are trying to move your hands, move your quilt, watch TV, plan dinner….

Consider doing one thing at a time-

YOUR ASSIGNMENT–sit down at your sewing machine and give it a try.

Good Morning, Quilters!

Welcome, welcome!

The doors are open to our Sunflowers in December Quilt Show!  The quilts are all free motion quilting samplers from our recent online FREE machine quilt-a-long HERE

One of the best things about a quilt show like this is seeing the individuality of each quilt–even when we all started with the same basic concept and composition.  The quilts are very beautiful and very creative!  Thank you to all who participated!

BEST OF SHOW

Today’s show is being judged by YOU-the viewers.  Please vote on your favorite.  The name of the artist is below the quilt and please include the number if there is one.  (Do try to evaluate each quilt based on the quilt itself and not the photography–quilt photography is very tricky!)

The winner (announced on Friday, December 23) will receive a box of sewing goodies–thread, fabric and notions from The Inbox Jaunt as well as bragging rights!
