A Sisterly Collaboration

Kaleidoscope Quilt, Lori Kennedy, quilted by Patricia Cavaliere

Good Morning, Quilters!

Have you ever purged your quilt tops and wished you hadn’t???

Sometimes it’s all about vision!

Years ago, when I was really having fun with fabric dyeing, I made this kaleidoscope quilt top.

It was so long ago, I don’t remember the details other than I watched a Ricky Tims video on The Quilt Show, followed along to make my own design/pattern and then stitched it with hand dyes.

It languished in my quilt closet for years so when my sister, Patricia expressed interest in it–I gladly handed it off to her. (One less UFO on my list–I thought I was so clever!)

Then it languished in her quilt closet for years.

Until last week.  She sent me these photos.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry!

I LOVE what she did with it!

I didn’t have THE VISION!

File this under…

What else is in my closet?

What was I thinking?

Way to go, Sister!

What about YOU?  Any diamonds in the rough in YOUR quilting closet?

Anything YOU can look at with fresh eyes? New ways to quilt?

It’s all about vision!

I’m off to the eye-doctor….

The Modern Leaf Square-A Machine Quilting Tutorial

Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters!

Over the last several Tuesday Tutorials, we have been adding to our repertoire of motifs that can be used to fill square blocks:

The Basic Block,

The Divided Square

The Square Daisy and

The Square Flower

In all of the Square Block motifs so far, a single element has been repeated along all the axes.

Today’s tutorial, The Modern Leaf Square, we have two different elements:  the leaf and the berry, alternating on the axes.

THE MODERN LEAF SQUARE-A FREE MOTION QUILT TUTORIAL

Begin by drawing diagonal lines across the block, then divide the square horizontally and vertically. Add a small circle in the center.

Begin stitching in the left, upper corner.  Stitch the first half of an oval leaf, ending on the central circle.

Stitch over 1-2 stitches, stitch a short straight line along the vertical axis and add a circle.

Closely echo stitch back to the central circle.

Add a full leaf on the diagonal axis.

Stitch over a few stitches, add a circle and the next leaf.

Continue working clockwise around the square, alternating leaves and circles.

Complete the first leaf and exit the block.

Stitch in the ditch or seam line to begin quilting the next block.  Or knot off before turning over another Modern Leaf Block.

Simple and pretty–thoroughly Modern.

For a different look, change the placement of the elements:  add the circles on the diagonals and the leaves on the horizontal and vertical axes.

Or combine both in the same quilt for more interest!

Hope this inspires YOU to get quilting TODAY!!!
