Machine Quilting Half Square Triangles: HST Flowers

HST Flowers, Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters!

We are making good progress on our Spring Machine Quilting Sampler.

This quilt was designed to help YOU quilt YOUR quilts by demonstrating how motifs can be stitched on print fabrics and on pieced blocks.

We will be stitching 4 motifs for small Half Square Triangle (HST) blocks as well as 4 border motifs.

Last week we stitched The Basic HST Motif and X Marks the Spot

Both of these methods are easy and (fairly) quick and look great on any quilt.

This week we will stitched Half Square Flowers and Half Square Sunshine to add a little more personality to our HSTs.

THE HALF SQUARE FLOWER:  A MACHINE QUILTING TUTORIAL

Begin stitching in the corner of the light fabric.

Stitch up the left side of the block for several stitches, then add an arc to the bottom of the block.

Echo stitch the arc, back to the left side.

Stitch parallel to the lower edge of the block, stop at the corner–remaining on the light fabric.

Stitch parallel to the diagonal seamline for several stitches, then stitch toward the arc–stopping a short distance from the arc.

Add a square petal.

Stitch back to the diagonal and create another petal, following the diagonal line, then back to the arc.

Stitch along the seamline or in the ditch to the next block in row.

Continue stitching the entire row of Half Square Triangle Flowers.

By machine quilting on the light-colored fabric and not on the darker fabric–the darker fabric will “pop”!

The Half Square Triangle Flower works well in small HSTs-as small as two inches and it works equally well in larger HSTs.

For those of you with Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3, The Square Flower and variations are found on page 96.

May YOUR garden and YOUR quilts be overflowing with flowers!

  1. Oh, good– the square flowe. That’s one of my favorites! Thanks, Lori, for this latest quilt-along. I’m really enjoying practicing on pieced blocks. This is going to be so cute when it’s finished.

  2. What a sweet idea for a HST. I’ll be stealing that one for sure. Lori, as usual, you’re the best!

  3. This is a wonderful suggestion for the future, love the way this looks on the HST. So easy, but so sweet at the same time. Gives a beautiful look to this piece!

  4. I was on a month long trip, and will be leaving in a few days again. I went to $Tree to get supplies to practice. Besides graph paper, I got regular lined paper, also PRIMARY TABLET PAPER!! That one is fun to use. I am learning sooo much. Thank you.

  5. Thank you for the lessons, Lori. I’m seeing improvement since learning to slow down, draw out the design, then quilt on a practice sandwich, and finally move on to the quilt!
