  1. When I was in basic training for ROTC, I had my company XO ask me, “Cadet, do you ever stop smiling?”

    I answered, “No, Sir!”

A year later, the General was coming to visit our ROTC unit. When his adjutant showed up, I realized it was my former XO. He took one look at me and said, “I know you! You’re the smiling cadet!”

  2. Thanks for the opportunity to share.

My favorite veteran is my father-in-law. Paul McGuff (Air Force Captain, retired) was a navy flyer in the Pacific during WW2 and later a founding officer in the Air Force. He did not speak much of wartime, but I loved listening to his stories. He flew many missions and was shot down and ditched in the ocean several times. He always made those harrowing times, when he nearly died, sound like an adventure, although I know the experiences changed him deeply. He died last year at the age of 97. In the 25 years that I knew him, he was a very brave, compassionate and quietly strong man and he is sorely missed.

God bless all who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe.
