The Nutcracker-Act One

Nutcracker, FMQ, Quilting Pattern

Good Morning, Quilters!

Last year I had an idea to make a life-size nutcracker to hang on my wall.

But like most ideas-even good ones–it crashed into the Time Crunch Wall.

So I tucked a few sketches into a folder for 2016…

This is larger than most of my projects, so I have a several technical issues to work out.

But I thought you might like to follow along as I work through the challenges.

Nutcracker, FMQ, Quilting Pattern

The first challenge is to draw an outline of a Nutcracker–a small-scale pattern.

The second challenge is finding the best way to enlarge the pattern.

To the printer?  or just do a scaled drawing?

I’ll let you know more next week…

What about YOU do YOU have any Christmas projects that didn’t make the cut last year?

We’d  LOVE  to hear!

Merry Stitching,

Lori

Easy Breezy Flowers-A Machine Quilting Tutorial

Flowers, Machine Quilting, Tutorial, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters!

I know winter is fast approaching, but this is what popped up in my sketchbook–Flowers!

Sometimes when I am doodling mindlessly a gem emerges…

This flower is simple to stitch and can be scaled much larger or quite small.  Stitch it on red fabric to make a quick Christmas pillow or add it to any quilt to quickly fill the background.

THE EASY BREEZY FLOWER-MACHINE QUILTING TUTORIAL

Begin by stitching a curl.  Echo stitch the curl.

Flowers, Machine Quilting, Tutorial, Lori Kennedy

Stitch a wavy line around the curl.

Echo stitch the wavy line.

Stitch another curl with echo stitching.

The trick here is to tuck the wavy line (petals) into the adjacent flower to create a cluster effect.

Because the flower is so free-form this is easy to do!

Easy….

Breezy!

Hope YOU will stitch this on YOUR next quilt!

From Sunflowers to Poinsettias

FMQ, Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy, Christmas

Good Morning, Quilters!

Hope you all had a very happy Thanksgiving!

And I hope the fridge is stocked with leftovers so you don’t have to cook tonight because I have a great project to kick off Christmas!

With just a little razzle dazzle,  The Sunflower Sampler becomes the Poinsettia Sampler!

(For those of you who haven’t been here in awhile, The Sunflower Sampler was our recent quilt-a-long.  You can find all the instructions for The Sunflower Sampler HERE.)

FMQ, Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy, Christmas

Substitute the Poinsettia FMQ tutorial HERE for the Sunflower center.

Choose alternating curvy and linear motifs around the center to fill the background.  I used Spirals  and The Twist free motion quilting tutorial –and alternated the two motifs in sections around the poinsettia.

By using matching thread, the background recedes and allows the poinsettia to “pop”.

For a simple border, I added wavy lines-one inch apart- and echo stitched each line for more emphasis.

When I finished  the border, I realized this would have been the perfect time to have used a Twin Needle–but we’ll save that lesson for another day–coming soon!
