The Eagle-Free Motion Quilting

 INDEPENDENCE DAY

The Eagle-Free Motion Quilting

Happy Fourth of July!  One of my favorite holidays.

The Eagle-Free Motion Quilting

The day would not be complete without Ray Charles singing America, The Beautiful

The Eagle-Free Motion Quilting

The Eagle (20″ square) was stitched on Robert Kaufman “Riviera” Kona cotton with Aurifil cotton 50 wt in the bobbin and Sulky Rayon on top on my Bernina 820 without a stitch regulator.

The Eagle is part of The Patriot Series:  USA and Flag, Anchor and Star -yesterday…

Wishing YOU all the joys and blessings of this summer holiday,

Lori

Star and Anchor Free Motion Quilting

Free Motion Quilted AnchorToday is Day Two of my “Patriot’s Challenge”. (See Day One:  USA and The Flag free motion quilt project and Anchor #1 that started the idea…)

In this work-in-a-series, I limited myself to one piece of fabric:  Robert Kaufman Kona in “Riviera” and one thread:  Sulky Rayon in pale yellow.

Working in series allows the artist to explore a theme and/or a technique in more depth.  The challenge is to keep the series unified so it looks like a collection.

Unity can be achieved by repeating elements.  In this case the background fill, the colors and the thread are repeated, with the major design element varied.

Free Motion Quilted AnchorWhile working on each project, begin asking the question…What IF?

What if…this free motion quilted pattern instead…

What if…this border instead of spirals?

What if…this central design instead of a star or anchor?

What if…this negative space instead of…

Free Motion Quilted AnchorSoon, you’ll be working in series…

Tomorrow:  The Eagle, A Free Motion Quilt Patriot’s Challenge

Celebrating Stitching,

Free Motion Quilting-The Patriot’s Challenge

Free motion quilting, flag and USA MapWORKING IN SERIES

Last year for the Fourth of July, I made The Anchor Quilt

I intended to stitch a few more Americana quilts that were swirling in my head, but summer slipped away…

Free motion quilting, flag and USA MapThis year, I challenged myself to work in series–create several free motion quilts with a patriotic theme.

One way to help unify a group of quilts is to limit the supplies:  In this challenge, I limited myself to a piece of Robert Kaufman Kona fabric in Riviera blue and Sulky Rayon thread in pale yellow.

This flag quilt was a simple way to begin the series…It is 7″ x 10″.  The Greek Key free motion quilt motif may be found in the weekly tutorials and is one of my favorites.

The second quilt is a bit larger…USA is 20″ x 15″….

Tomorrow…More of The Patriot’s Challenge…Working in Series...

And there’s still time to join me!

Choose one color fabric:  red, white or blue?…and one thread…YOUR country…

…and crown Thy good with brotherhood…
