Tutorial Tuesday–The Upward Curl Heart

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I’m sure you would all like to make a little vase quilt for your table..(Everyone except Gwendie who won The Valentine’s Day Doodle Quilt!)

Today’s motif is a variation on The Upward Curl.  If you haven’t had time to try curling-–  it might be helpful to read through that tutorial before continuing here…

Start with two drawn lines–these will be your “rails”.  In the example below, the rails are one inch apart.  Start at the bottom and make a small upward curl and then stop…

From this point, make a large downward curl…tapering back to your starting point.

Finally, trace along the left rail until you are past the first curl and ready to begin your next motif. The photo below shows how the pattern would look as a border—lovely!

In the practice quilt below, I added another element to the Upward Curl Heart

The first two steps are the same:  Small upward curl,  Large downward curl...Then,instead of tracing back on the left rail–-simply “bounce”  or “scallop”  on the outside of the Large Curlback to the top of the motif.

This motif stands alone as a one-sided design…but if you add the other half, you’ll have Cupid singing your praises!

After you completed several rows of this pattern, pick out the best area–chop off the rest and bind it as a vase quilt!

Also, this row quilt would look fabulous with a few rows of Spiral Hearts–check out that tutorial here!
